A damp proof course is a vitally important part of the building process, as it prevents rising damp climbing the walls of a property. An effective damp proof course will stop any dampness at low levels before it causes any problems higher up the walls.

Unfortunately, over time some old damp proof courses can fail and in very old buildings there may still be impervious bricks, slates or bitumen as these methods were traditionally used as the main line of defence against rising damp. In some instances, there may even be no damp proof course at all.
